Apple’s graphics API, Metal 4, introduces native AI capabilities, referring to AI features that are built directly into the system’s core architecture, rather than being added as a feature.
Most current software is not AI-native. This in-built enhanced AI will incorporate natural language processing, developing the potential for tailored AI experiences that will enable smoother, more intelligent and adaptive responses.
With AI being deeply integrated into Apple’s design framework and functionality, along with its graphics boost, which appeals to the gaming community, this is a strong market move that will appeal to both game developers and AI-focused developers alike.
Apple’s streamlined API manages resources more efficiently with Metal 4, whilst building on the more familiar MTLDevice framework. In a recent article for Developer, Ryan Daws from TechForge Media states, “Studios can adopt new features incrementally rather than rewriting entire applications—a pragmatic approach that acknowledges the realities of development schedules and resources” (10 June, 2025).
